IT in Traditional and Student-Centered Learning

Lesson 12 – Information Technology in Support of Student-Centered Learning
In today’s globalizing world, many kinds of jobs and professions are performed by people who can do more than just the routine tasks like encoding, stamping, and basing answers from standard formulas and solutions. Jobs today, moreover, do not just require manual labor. They entail worker capacities in problem-solving, analytical and critical thinking, and decision-making for modernized jobs such as in marketing, advertising, and so on.

The BIG question is:
How can students be ready for these kinds of jobs they are to face in their future?
You already have an idea how a traditional classroom instruction works, don’t you? As I have discussed in my previous blog, the traditional classroom has the teacher sitting or standing in front of the classroom, facing the students who are all ears to the teacher’s lecture. Here, the teacher is the deliverer and the main speaker in the classroom. The students respond to questions and answer worksheets and quizzes to identify and measure what they have learned in the lesson proper.

The outcomes of traditional classroom instruction are students who are good at understanding, memorizing, and reciting information learned in their traditionally delivered subjects. There is no black propaganda against this kind of classroom setting for it has proven to create great professionals who are also purposeful members of the society. However, there is always a BETTER kind or classroom instruction that could make even BETTER-performing students.
What I am talking about now is the student-centered learning (SCL), where students do much during the learning process. Students learn by working in groups; they are the ones discussing problems, making decisions, solving problems, and presenting solutions in the class. This kind of instruction allows students to develop, employ, and improve their higher order thinking skills (HOTS) that will lead them to gain effectiveness as learners.

Both traditional and student-centered instructions can be more efficient and effectual when they are supplemented by information and communication technologies (ICTs). The teacher can always plan and select the most useful ICT she can use in the classroom that can make the learning further improved. She can assign tasks that can be done in the computer by students in groups. A case study, for example, can be a great activity for students. A computer program can be used for this matter given that it presents a case to be studied by students, allows them to input all the processed information, permits them to create a newsletter by a word publisher, and engages them into interactive reciprocation of feedback from one group to another . Through this constructive ICT activity that presents a real life-like assignment, the students become more active individuals who are self-aware of the learning process.

Let’s go ICT!

Hi, this is a really refreshing commentary for educators alike. Mrs. Reyes, you are outstanding by the way, not just with the commentaries but also in your mastery of technical jargons. Just don't forget to check your use of terminologies. I am more inclined to appreciate "student-centered approach" over "student-centered classroom," as a practitioner, for the latter may refer to a place, but according to nonconventional education, a classroom may be any place where the teaching-learning process is realized. Take the outdoors, for example and in rare occasions of course. A place just needs to be conducive to an atmosphere of learning for it to meet the requirements of the teaching-learning process. Also, I would love to read more about integrating IT with other teaching methods, like the lecture method, if you are zeroing on student-centered learning. Just using IT (i.e. dvds, recordings, etc.) in the classroom does not mean that the teacher is already being innovative. These are just my thoughts and I hope that they have served their purpose well. To add, I did not watch the video, but if there is no demo of the integration of IT in classroom teaching, then it would not be purposive.

  3. I really appreciate your comment, April. I believe I have included links and concepts in my previous blogs regarding the "proper" integration of ICTs in classrooms. There are levels of integration, actually. Thus, what you meant about merely using DVDs and recordings in the classroom can be categorized under the simple integration since it just serves the basic functions of the ICTs used. Let me direct you to that blog later. hehe.

Btw, thank you for your suggestion about the "student-centered classroom".... I should really change it. What I meant with it was really the approach not the place. Salamat! ((:

  10. Hi Mrs. Blogger! Its actually my first time to visit and read your blog. It really catches my interest. Very different from those blogs that I have read before. This is a vague issue not just for educators and their students but also for those people that are in a political position. A social matter that needs to come up with a perfect solution. Well, okay, in terms of education here in the Philippines we are much left behind from other countries. Why? Because students here are more used to "spoon feeding" style of teaching and learning. They don't even know now how to do their work as a student. Incorporating "Information Technology" in teaching and schooling has a lot of advantages as well as disadvantages, which I'm not going to discuss further but I'm going to sight one or couple maybe for both sides. Otherwise, this will take too long and I should make my own blog instead, right? Hehe. Moving on, the advantage of using IT approach for teaching is that, most likely this will catch more of the attention and interest of the students. For some cases, wherein students are required to report or discuss certain topics, they can use IT approach to present their topics. This will help them simplify their report, save time in making paper visual aids and still it will help them realize and understand more of the topics that they are discussing because they are the ones who made it, if, they really does it, =). However, haven't you realized that people nowadays are more attached to computers and other high technology devices and programs? I personally think, this is too much. People are now revolving their lives into technologies. This will greatly affect the attitude of the students right? But of course, we cannot avoid this due to modernization of our world today. And how about the people from public schools specially in the provincial areas? This is where the political side of this issue comes in. Correct? This is taking so long now, I should wrap it up. Hope this comment makes sense to you and to your readers because somehow, I don't understand it perfectly as this is a vague issue. Bye for now! Have a good night! Good luck and more power to your career and to your blog!

  11. Hi, Conrad!

All points mentioned are correct. I just hope our political leaders would allot more funds to our education so that students from all walks of our country could experience this "modernization" in today's classrooms.

Thank you, Con! This is a lot! I owe you one! ((:

  17. That's a good reminder for teachers, ate lalis. As educators, it is not enough for us to be just smart and experts in our subjects... we also have to be creative and innovative in presenting our lessons and holding the class. We can always use modern technologies, since our students today are very techie, and they often feel challenged and excited when these ICTs are employed in the teaching-learning process.

Thank you for the comment! ^^

  20. Tr.Celine,
Everything about(SCL)were interpreted at its best, through this post..
I am more encourage to use and practice it as my guidepost on becoming to be a more effective and efficient leader inside the classroom.
Like, in cooperative learning. It was manifested to be a non-threatening options of students practices inside their classroom.
    More power!

  21. It really is! Plus, SCL is very engaging. It lets us move one step away from the usual direct instruction, where we teachers do most part of the talking. SCL makes our students feel they are an important part of the classroom by letting them do certain necessary roles to make the learning process centered on them.
    Keep it up, Tr.Lot! ((:

  22. Hi, Celine

You have a very interesting blog regarding Student-Centered Learning and Information Technology. I am aware of this concept or a variation of that and the role of I.T. in education as early as 2003, but the idea of progressive education has been around since the 19th century. Educators came up with this concept to address the changing needs of the students and to avail of the benefits that are available in the Information Age as far as I.T. is concerned.

Students benefit when SCL is integrated into the curriculum. For example, they are more motivated to study. SCL is not limited to grade school or high school. It can also be applied to higher education.

ICT on the other hand helps the students become familiar with computers and other technologies. It also helps in the learning process by developing the senses. In other words, it makes learning fun.

Again, you have a very nice piece Celine. Good work!

  23. Thanks for your comment, Kuya Everly!

What makes the teaching-learning process more effective is to make it exciting for students. Thus, making the instruction student-centered while integrating ICTs is such a great innovation in our educational system. Its biggest benefit is it familiarizes students in major forms of ICT that they will be using not just in classrooms, but mostly in their real life and future career.
