Lesson 15 – Understanding Hypermedia

What is HYPERMEDIA?
There are many ways to define Hypermedia.
“Hypermedia is basically a computer-based information retrieval system that enables a user to gain or provide access to texts, audio and video recordings, photographs and computer graphics related to a particular subject.” (Wikipedia)
“Hypermedia is used as a logical extension of the term hypertext in which graphics, audio, video, plain text and hyperlinks intertwine to create a generally non-linear medium of information. This contrasts with the broader term multimedia, which may be used to describe non-interactive linear presentations as well as hypermedia.” (Webopedia)
“Hypermedia is a style of building systems for organising, structuring and accessing information around a network of multimedia nodes connected together by links.” (Conclin, 1987)
I’ve got a hyper-treat for you!

Hyperland is a film made in 1990 that focuses on Douglas Adams and explains adaptive hypertext and hypermedia.
In education, we can define hypermedia as a variant of the broader term multimedia but is designed to be of assistance to the learning process in schools for students. As an instructional media, the hypermedia is packaged as an educational computer software where lessons are presented in a more exciting, adventurous, and virtual way. It is said that most educational IT applications are hypermedia and these include:
Tutorial Software Packages

Knowledge Web Pages

Simulation Instructional Games

Learning Project Management

The hypermedia lets the students experience its outstanding feature that enables them to learn at their own pace and skills. The students choose their path, flow, and events of instructions themselves. They can try various kinds of activities and move on to the next ones even half finishing the previous activities. That is one good thing about the hypermedia—it is non-linear, thus, giving its users (usually learners) to navigate sites according to their own desired routes.
Without a doubt, hypermedia is another helpful tool in education. However, just like everything, it also has its flaws.
Hypermedia involves numerous kinds of media such as text, audio, photos, and videos, but it does not necessarily use all those types in just one presentation. The virtual learning feature may be one of its greatest points; however, the teacher still needs to make the instruction more efficient by choosing the most appropriate program for the students and by measuring the hypermedia’s pros and cons to the learning process. Hence, it is still in the teacher’s hands to decide on which specific aspects and how long the instructional program will be used in the classroom.

  1. hypermedia makes learning fun and exciting. however, traditional learning is for everybody because not all people own a computer set or laptop and students might have questions about the lesson/s that can instantly be answered by the instructor. omg nosebleed!

  2. I agree. The traditional method is still very useful in teaching students... that's what we are used to and I cannot deny the fact that it continues to bring up dynamic people in our society. The use of hypermedia and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) in today's instruction is still idealistic for countries like ours. Let's aim for more support from our leaders regarding this matter. All in all, let's just hope for the best. ((:

  3. This is an engaging strategy to teach lessons; nevertheless, can schools afford this software/program(?).

  4. That's the basic and biggest problem we have when we talk about the integration of ICTs in classrooms. We have to admit that this proposal is still very ideal, considering the situations of most schools in our country. However, there are more schools that can afford to employ this modernization. In fact, some companies send their people to different schools (even in provinces) to offer several software that teachers can use in their classes. They just need to make investments... it's for a good cause.

Moreover, there are also computer-based activities that can be easily accessed and downloaded from the Internet. Many are for free, so schools would not have to worry about the extra fees those activities would cost.

  5. Hi, Celine

It looks like Hypermedia is a difficult topic for some of your readers. Only four comments are posted by the time I posted mine.

Hypermedia is not really that difficult a topic. It is well defined in your article. If people are using computer-based information, like I do, they are dealing with hypermedia.

The integration of hypermedia in education is a very important innovation. Students benefit greatly from instant access to information even without paper-based references on hand. Hypermedia provides extension in accessing information. For example, textbooks and references in the U.S. these days actually come with online links for even greater source of information.

Not all students are the same. Some are faster than others. The good thing about hypermedia is that it allows the students to learn at their own pace.

Keep up the good work Celine. Nicely done!

  6. Hello, Kuya Everly!

The application of hypermedia in the teaching-learning process is certainly a great innovation. I really appreciate your comment slash clarification about hypermedia and its huge contribution to education.

  7. Paano kung may gustong itanong yung estujante, o may hindi sya naintindihan? Maipapaliwanag ba yun ng hypermedia? edi ba syempre, teacher pa rin yung sasagot... ibig sabihin, mas maganda pa rin yung traditional.
